London Police Smash $200 Million
Drug Racket
Britain's
largest simultaneous drug raid was carried out last month, using 520
officers to target suspects at more than 30 addresses in a massive pre-dawn
operation. As helicopters hovered overhead, officers raided the addresses.
London's Metropolitan Police arrested 22 people on suspicion of drug
trafficking and money laundering during the raid, seizing an estimated
100 kilos of suspected cocaine, along with cash and firearms.
The Met Police said the raids targeted
a criminal network believed to be one of the biggest drug trafficking
networks currently in the United Kingdom. The operation took seven weeks
to plan; the network were believed to have processed around $200 million
in the last six months, most of it from the proceeds of drug trafficking.

Orange
County Dedicates New Aircraft To Fallen Heroes
The
Orange County (FL) Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit will host an open
house on March 27, 2008 from 11 am to 4 pm. The Aviation Unit took delivery
of a new Bell 407 helicopter in January, and it will be publicly dedicated
to all of the Orange County deputy sheriffs who have been killed in
the line of duty and made the ultimate sacrifice. This new helicopter
received some very special artwork preformed by Edwards & Associates,
Inc. The names of all of OCSO’s fallen deputies, along with the National
Law Enforcement Memorial logo were placed on the rear vertical stabilizer.
OCSO would like to say thank you to the local aviation industry as
well as the vendors who provide the equipment that enables the unit
to perform their missions proficiently and safely. Shadin Avionics,
Bell Helicopter-Textron, Spectrolab, Chelton, Avidyne Corporation, Edwards
& Associates and L-3 Communications will sponsor lunch for all in attendance,
as well as specialty items to commemorate this new helicopter and event.
If you would like to fly your aircraft to this Orlando event, please
contact Scott Sampsel via email at Scott.sampsel@ocfl.net or call 407-893-3600.

Missing Skiers Found at Lake Tahoe
Two
skiers were found in good condition last month after being plucked from
the snowy Sierra, Nevada mountains by a Placer County (CA) Sheriff’s
Department helicopter. Rescuers had been concerned that fresh snow and
plunging temperatures would complicate efforts to find the skiers, but
were hopeful they had survived. Both men were moving across the snow
when the helicopter aircrew spotted them. The helicopter landed at the
site, but only had room for one of the skiers. An observer stayed behind
with one skier while the pilot flew the other skier to a safe landing
zone, then returned for the second skier and the observer.

Delaware State Police
Increases Fleet
A
new Bell 412 model helicopter was delivered to the Delaware State Police
last month. Although the Delaware State Police have an all Bell fleet,
consisting of 407 models, this is the first 412 to be flown by them.
The aircraft has been extensively customized with input from their pilots,
maintainers, medics and others in the department. This will allow the
412 to accomplish any of the various mission profiles they are required
to undertake.
Captain Jeffrey R. Evans, commander of the Delaware State Police
Aviation Section stated, "We have been extremely satisfied with the
performance of our Bell helicopters, and when it came time to purchase
another, we naturally turned to Bell."

King
County Aircrew Receives Award
Sgt.
Sydney Jackson, Tim Shook and Mark Rockwood of the King County (WA)
Sheriff’s Office Air Support Division received the sheriff's office
LifeSaver Award last month for a very successful and much-publicized
search and rescue mission. In December 2006, a snow skier had been lost
for three days when the KCSO’s Guardian One aircrew was able to join
the search. They located the stranded woman on a riverbank, but could
not reach her without a hoist.
Approximately 100 feet downstream of the woman, the crew was able
to hover over a rocky area where Sgt. Jackson jumped out of the OH-58
onto a large rock. Jackson waded through the river carrying a water
logged rescue pack to care for the woman. Soon after, Guardian One radioed
to Jackson that a Navy UH-60 was returning to hoist both of them to
safety.
The city council approved money for Guardian One to be equipped with
a rescue hoist after that mission, which was installed in January 2007,
followed by crew training in April 2007. Guardian One’s hoist was used
in 20 missions in the remaining months of that year.

with this new technology. Lexington police have two helicopters, which
have been in use since April 2006.

RAVEN Ready To Fight
Fires
Last
month, the Washoe County (NV) Sheriff's Office unveiled a newly retrofitted
helicopter, equipped to drop water on wildfires. The Huey HH-1H will
provide a local resource that can quickly respond when fires start burning,
potentially keeping them small and manageable, officials said.
The local county commission agreed to fund the final $162,500 needed
to equip the sheriff's chopper with a 300-gallon water tank, a snorkel
pump and other firefighting gear last year. Until it was made available,
fire crews had to depend on state or federal helicopters or fixed-wing
aircraft to fight fires. The helicopter, operated by the sheriff's Regional
Aviation Enforcement Unit (RAVEN) will be available on short notice
during the height of fire season.

saw the teenager was struggling and decided to jump into the sea and
drag him to the sandbar. The swimmer was rescued and taken to hospital
as a precautionary measure.
